Quahog Quorale

Moonie and I stopped into The Parlour last night to check out “Quahog Quorale,” a group my friend Jennifer participates in that advertised their latest gathering as “a quorum of quadlibetic quoristers questing a quantuplicity of tunes.” We didn’t know what to expect, but we found a circle of women and men of all ages happily belting out all kinds of ditties. They seemed to be having a ball, and their joy in singing was infectious. If I’d been familiar with any of the songs, I’d have joined them.

An unusually quiescent Moonie studied the group of strangers and Jennifer. “Can I hug them?” he queried.

“Maybe next time,” I responded, trying not to quell his enthusiasm.

John Juxo

Last night Moonie got to hang out with John Juxo, who tickles the heck out of keys and plays the heck out of accordions. I can’t even keep the dozens of bands and acts Jux plays with straight, but he seems to make music most often with The Goods, Lisa Marie, and, the energetic group we caught last night, The House Combo at Nick-a-Nee’s.

Moonie thought he was a really cool cat. He thought Jux’s pocket made a pretty nice hangout, too.

It’s hard to tell as Moonie doesn’t have eyelids, but I’m pretty sure they’re both winking.

Moonie & Monti

Chris Monti is an amazing musician. I should know; I’ve been taking lessons from the guy for six years now. He’ll pick up any type of music from around the world and make it his, and he’ll find time to play for sick kids in hospitals. He’s a-OK in my book.

After pausing to help Moonie work on his tan, Chris was a-OK in Moonie’s book, too.

Moonie & Melanie

Oh joy! Last night Moonie got to meet Melanie Moore, a fixture on the Rhode Island music scene. A beautiful dancer, Melanie comes out to support various music and move to its rhythm. She paused just long enough to cradle Moonie.

Moonie in turn wanted to be with lovely Melanie forever, and he also wanted a better view of the live bluegrass.

What better seat than on top of his new friend Melanie’s head?

“Don’t Stop the Music”

What a wonderful concept: the Providence Public Library is just about halfway through its three-month hosting of “Don’t Stop the Music”, a celebration of music and music making. The library is hosting a mixture of exhibits, workshops, films, and live music (curated by my friend Chris Daltry) in its gorgeous 193-year-old halls. Last night Moonie and I caught three amazing acts of live music among its marbled halls: Chris Daltry and Mark Howard from The ‘Mericans; Allysen Callery; and John Faraone joined by his very tall but very lovely-voiced friend Thomas Woulfe. Moonie was in heaven during the performance, and of course he had to pop up on stage when it was over to absorb the last few notes of music still echoing in the library’s hallowed halls. Apparently the music is easier to hear if you pull some surfing moves on the music stand.

Ice Cream

I got a little jealous seeing people all around Providence strolling with ice cream cones, so when we got home, I decided to make one of my own for me and Moonie to share. I gave it to him to hold for just a minute.

When I turned back, I was greeted with this sight:

Moonie says it was “too big” and that now it’s “Moonie-sized,” which means just right.

Thanks for saving me the last bite, little dude.

Thai Picnic

While enjoying today’s beautiful weather, Moonie and I decided to pick up some delicious takeout at Bee’s Thai Cuisine and have ourselves a yummy Thai picnic at India Point Park.

It sure was windy there. Poor Moonie was in danger of blowing away but gamely paused for a photo.

The food was delicious – Bee’s mixes sweet things like mango and pumpkin into spicy things like curry for interesting flavor creations – but Moonie was less interested in the vittles (except for splashing around in the little container of cucumber sauce a bit for fun) and very, very interested in my Thai ice tea.

He only got a sip, though. The last thing the world needs is a hyped-on-caffeine Moonie.
