Hurty Nose
I accidentally smashed my nose so hard into the sharp side of a door this morning, I saw stars.
Seriously.
It was like some kind of Looney Toons cartoon.
Thankfully, I work at a place with a nice nurse with ice packs and nice cafeteria people with ice cubes. Moonie helped me secure both so I could ice my face while he gave me good vibes.
Moonie Donates Blood
I have a confession: I’ve spent more of my life donating blood than not donating blood, but I still haven’t learned to enjoy it.
But it’s much more bearable when you have Moonie along for the ride.
I’m borderline anemic, so I bulk up on iron pills and things like red meat and spinach and Raisinets in the days leading up to each appointment at the Rhode Island Blood Center, but I still end up having my blood spun in the centrifuge to make sure the iron count is high enough. Sometimes they even have to prick more than one finger to try more than one spin. Moonie comforted me from the finger pricks.
He reminded me, when they brought out the intimidating bags and my heart started speeding up, that each pint can save up to three peoples’ lives and that I was doing a good thing. He’s a good little cheerleader.
Kelly Cleveland
Whee! Moonie found someone who likes spinning as much as he does – except instead of standing on records spinning in the record player, she uses hula hoops to get her spin on. She’s none other than Kelly Cleveland, a sweet woman with a gorgeous voice who has performed with Red Eye Flight, Glass Bottom Boat, and Allysen Callery, among others.
“I think I blinked,” she said when I blinded her with the flash for this photo, “But I don’t think Moonie did.”
It’s hard to tell with that guy.
Steve, Krista and Ian
Whoa! What a night last Saturday was.
Moonie got to meet three of his heroes: Steve Allain, a talented singer/songwriter both solo and with Cardboard Ox; Krista Baroni, a gorgeous singer/songwriter from Boston; and the fantastic Ian Fitzgerald, who will be playing the Newport Folk Festival next month.
Moonie was in heaven with this trio. Thanks to Krista for keeping him steady when he thought he might swoon.
John Fuzek
John Fuzek is all over Rhode Island and beyond. He’s not only a musician himself, playing original music solo and Neil Young songs with Forever Young; he’s also a music promoter who puts on various shows and festivals to connect aspiring musicians with new fans. Moonie got to meet John at the Downtown Sundown Series, where he lines up four musicians a night on summer Saturday evenings to play at the national memorial in the heart of Providence. In his spare time, John’s a graphic designer and animal lover.
He’s also six feet taller than Moonie, so they kind of make a funny pair.
Pink Flamingos
Pride Day Cake
PrideFest, as far as Moonie is concerned, is a holiday. And holidays, as he will be sure to tell you, require cakes.
So he decorated his very own PRIDE cake.
And then dove right into it.
Pride Day
Today is Rhode Island’s PrideFest, promising a whole afternoon of music and mayhem followed by New England’s only illuminated PRIDE night parade.
Moonie, ever the rainbow lover, has been looking forward to this for weeks.
Catch him volunteering at the LGBT Center’s booth early afternoon before heading to watch Heather Rose in Clover. Chances are he’ll have eaten the barrette by then – he keeps mistaking it for candy – but with his pink hair he’ll still be in colorful form.
Cosmo
Moonie and I grabbed a drink with my mom last night before heading to an art reception where I had some pieces hanging in a local building. In the spirit of celebration, I agreed to order a cosmopolitan, which Moonie wanted to admire for its pinkness. It turned out, though, he just wanted to admire his own reflection in the glass stem.
He asked if he could come take a closer look at the pink, then scrambled up to the rim before I could answer.
