Short Short Story Film Festival

When you’re three inches tall, you can get pretty excited about short things.

So Moonie was elated about attending Merging Arts Productions’ 9th annual “Short Short Story Film Festival” a few weeks ago. The festival included four screenings – two each of a 17-set of “heartstrings” films and a 17-set of “headtrip” films – followed by a late-night reception, and Moonie was ready to rock.

We arrived a few minutes early for a 7:00 screening at wonderful AS220.

There was already a pretty good crowd!

Ice Cream, You Scream

On our way back from our walk to Blackstone Boulevard, Moonie spotted a bunch of people hanging out at Three Sisters, enjoying homemade ice cream on this unusually warm day.

“Ice cream! Ice cream!” Moonie chanted, hopping from foot to foot. He made a good argument, and we went in.

I THOUGHT they made a peppermint stick, but the nice lady behind the counter informed us they didn’t, although they MAY have made it once. She bent over backwards to find a similar flavor for Moonie and me, having us sample the dirty garden mint (the sharpness of fresh mint combined with the richness of dark chocolate chips). Moonie voted that we get a cup of it, and we settled with our ice cream at a little outdoor table.

It didn’t take long for him to ditch the spoon. Sometimes, when something is yummy, you just gotta dive in.

Blackstone Boulevard

Moonie and I are lucky enough to be able to walk to Blackstone Boulevard when we need a nature fix. Today was gorgeous, warm and sunny enough to feel like May instead of mid-December, and we hiked to the boulevard, then around Swan Point Cemetery. It gave Moonie plenty of chances to find cool stuff on the ground.

Like this mushroom.

Colonoscop-WHEE

Is there anything that Moonie doesn’t think is fun?

    (Short answer: nope.)

I’ve had a mysterious illness for months now and off-the-charts protein counts. There’s some kind of infection or long-term disease in my body. The best way to look around in a person without cutting them open is to, and I’ll just blurt this out, stick a scope up their bum.

    Moonie thinks that is AWESOME.

He wants one up his bum now, too. We had to tell him that all it would show is rainbows and cookie crumbs, and that would get boring, and he finally had to agree.

But he sure thought my own colonoscopy was a ball. Me, not so much. But living with my tan-line-free little nudist, who is so proud of his bum that his name is Moonie, is helping to encourage me to post about our little derriere adventure. We humans, maybe Americans especially, are very private about our private parts, and bum-related things are taboo to talk about. But 1 in 20 of us will develop colorectal cancer during our lifetimes, and other gastrointestinal diseases and issues will affect greater numbers of us, too. It’s something to inform ourselves about, not blush about.

Luckily, Moonie doesn’t find anything embarrassing (except for occasionally blushing around pretty ladies and the random inanimate objects he crushes on). So here is a precise rundown of our colonoscopy experience for anyone having this procedure soon or anyone curious what we’ll all face down the road. Read More

The Spectacular Cookie Smackdown!

Moonie has a lot of trouble choosing a favorite anything. But he’ll admit one thing: his favorite food group is cookies.

So it was a treat to arrive at Hope Artiste Village this afternoon for Rhode Island Food Fights’ annual Spectacular Cookie Smackdown. Ten different bakeries were scattered throughout the village’s long hallways offering multiple flavors of delicious cookies, while Yacht Club Soda provided cold soda samples and New Harvest Coffee Roasters offered nice hot coffee.

We arrived early, at Moonie’s insistence, and he hopped back and forth from foot to foot, periodically asking, “Is it cookie time yet?”

Suddenly we heard a merry jingling of bells, and Moonie’s amber eyes bugged out. “It’s Santa, it’s Santa, it’s Santa!” He shrieked. It was the second time we’d seen Santa this weekend. What were the odds? MAGIC, that’s what.

Inside, it took only moments for us to be handed a cup of yummy root beer and then a delicious little coconut macaroon. Moonie was off to a very happy start!

Scrabblekah IX

Moonie’s cool friend Renee threw a Scrabblekah party – billed as “the ninth annual mashup of everyone’s favorite word game and the Jewish holiday of fried goodness” – last night. Those things sounded great to Moonie! He got into the pre-party spirit by pulling out his little dreidel and singing every verse of the dreidel song.

Twice.

Then, of course, he had to choose the perfect hostess gift in addition to my boring ol’ wine. Nothing says “I love you” when you’re Moonie like the gift of cookies. Especially if they’re shaped like dreidels and menorahs.

He also found these yummy chocolate-covered Hanukkah-themed Oreos for Renee. But I had to keep an eye on them; he kept trying to sneak one.

#CelebrateDowncity

Moonie and I had a great afternoon at #CelebrateDowncity, a fun event our friend Chris Daltry curated in downtown Providence with a bunch of talented singers performing Christmas songs, plus all kinds of yummy food trucks. We stopped in all the local shops, enjoying wonderful wares, as we made our way to the action.

At Grant’s Block, Moonie got to hang with his little buddy Poco Loco while we waited for our tacos.

He wolfed his tacos quickly so he could go check out Allysen Callery and her daughter Ava. The two of them are super talented and so adorable!

Moonie also admired the little ears sewn into performer Chris Monti’s holiday hat. They were elf-eared twins!

Advent Calendar

I didn’t have advent calendars growing up. It’s not like I had a deprived childhood; it just wasn’t a tradition for us. But Moonie spotted one that had cute little teddy bears and he begged and begged and begged for it.

Advent1

Last night was the first night of December, so Moonie excitedly opened the little door marked “1,” holding his little breath in anticipation.

Brett’s Birthday

Today is Brett Davey’s birthday! Brett is a great guy who supports local music and makes fantastic videos. He’s funny and talented and he was nice enough to invite me and Moonie to his birthday party on Saturday, which was held at the gorgeous Columbus Theatre. Moonie was already giggling when we walked up and saw the marquee.

Brett19

Then we got inside, and Moonie found some room for our cupcakes while drooling over all the other yummy-looking goodies on the table.

Brett2

There is always some kind of artwork on the second of the Columbus’ three levels. Moonie found this sculpture that was part train, part animal-hide-upholstered bench.

He also admired the cake-topping photo of a young Brett. Tee hee!

Lord of the Pies, Stop 14: Tomaselli’s at Rosario

Oh boy oh boy! Moonie thought we had finished Lord of the Pies, but the nice folks at Tomaselli’s at Rosario are still accepting pizza passports through Friday. So of course we had to go last night!

When we arrived, we finally understood their name. Tomaselli’s is the restaurant inside of a social club called Rosario’s that hosts bunches of functions. Moonie liked that they had a few Christmas trees and a disco ball around their function room.

LOP-Tomasellis1

And he made himself right at home on the fancy leather office chairs that spin around. What a fun way to sit around a bar!

LOP-Tomasellis4

Then he had to hop up on said bar because he wanted to see what was on TV.
