Steve Allain

One thing Rhode Island hasn’t had a shortage of this weekend: music. It seems our little state has been teeming with music festivals and individual shows. I asked Moonie which act he’d like to check out last night, and he wanted to see his pal Steve Allain play the Portsmouth Publick House.

So we did.

Moonie was even greeted by his musical pal with a smile.

It was a great evening at the Publick House. We were seated near some happy groups of people that were digging the live music. Moonie and I split a pile of food, from turkey chili to a burger to mashed potatoes, and he ordered and polished off a “big boy” beer, meaning 22 ounces of hiccup-inducing liquid.

Steve played a great mix of original music, including some of our favorites from his latest album “Thirteen,” and covers that included some great blues renditions and a sweet serenade of the Beatles’ “Blackbird” to an adorable baby boy in the front row.

“That’s his youngest fan,” Moonie whispered to me, “But I’m still his littlest.”

ERB Rehearsal

4:52 p.m.: “Is it PRONK! yet?”
“No, Moonie.”

5:31 p.m.: “is it PRONK!” yet?”
“Five and a half weeks, little dude.”

6:47 p.m.: “Has it been five and a half weeks yet?”
(sigh)

He was clearly missing his red, white and shiny street marching band, so I took Moonie to the Extraordinary Rendition Band‘s weekly rehearsal tonight, where their bleats and beats floated along the river, mingling with the sounds from nearby bars and clubs and attracting delighted onlookers and scattered applause from passersby.

He was enthralled and danced away as they practiced. He thinks they played extra good because they had a nude little dude in the audience tonight.

I’m just glad he’s stopped asking about PRONK! for a bit. There are only so many cookies and rainbow-colored objects in the world for me to distract him with.

Food Truck Friday

My friend Jennifer Jane and I checked out Food Truck Friday at Roger Williams Park Carousel last week, which proved to consist of many, many food trucks and many, many people lined up for said food trucks.

But we did less checking out than Moonie.

I think he sampled every single item. He can swirl like the Tasmanian devil – a tiny, crazy blur but with a flash of pink – and unleash his appetite on anything.

O’Crepe? Not safe from Moonie.

Friskie Fries? Aptly named for my nude little dude.

Friskie-Fries

Careful, folks; before you bite into that taco, or bowl of noodles, or plate of chicken, just make sure a tiny pink-haired dude isn’t already in there, nibbling away at your food.

Providence Folk Festival

What’s a folk festival without Moonie?
Let’s hope we never find out.

Yesterday was the second annual Providence Folk Festival, and oh boy, was it a wonderful afternoon of music. Eighteen acts graced two simultaneous stages in the little national park in the heart of our city.

Its performers, including Cliff Eberhardt, Cardboard Ox, the Rank Strangers, and The Nields, could rest easy knowing that Moonie had everything under control (even if he was a mite small for all his Very Important Badges and had to wrap them many times around himself).

He was proud of himself for doing such a great job on the sound.

Pre-Pronk!

PRONK!, or Providence Honk, is an annual festival that draws street musicians from around the country to celebrate music here in our little state’s capital city. I believe this will be its 8th year (my 6th attending), but most importantly, it will be Moonie’s first.

And oh boy, can I tell you, he is VERY excited.

William Schaff

William Schaff is a prolific artist in many mediums, from pen and paint to embroidery and collage to comics and movies. Check out his gallery of recent works, some of which are for sale. In fact, Moonie and I are the proud new owners of one of his smaller (Moonie-sized, if you will) drawings from the very gallery!

He’s also a musician and a good friend to many musicians, so it’s not surprising that William has designed a dizzying amount of album art for both local and far-flung bands. Here’s a tiny taste of some of his albums:

I thought Moonie’s head might pop off the way he had it tilted all the way back, his little eyes bugging out as he tried to take in all of William’s artwork crawling up the walls – really, every surface – of his home base, “Fort Foreclosure.”

Project Undercover

Moonie loves two big things about Project Undercover: their cute teddy bear logo and the fact that they collect unopened diapers, underwear and socks for 45,000 Rhode Island kids every year. It’s easy to remember to donate clothes and household goods, but sometimes we forget the stuff under the covers, so to speak.

But Project Undercover is reminding us through their various collections and awareness campaigns and, last Thursday, through a “Taste of Summer” fundraiser that drew hundreds of people to its cause. Moonie, of course, was high on the event’s guest list.

(Actually, I think his little bear buddy snuck him in.)

He had a blast sampling food from great local vendors La Creperie, The Duck & Bunny, Capital Grille, Sicilia’s Pizzaria, The Backyard Food Company, and Wes’ Rib House, happily washing down his yums with “Captain America” beer tastings from Trinity Brewhouse.

When he wasn’t wolfing down everything in sight, Moonie was grooving happily to live jazz by Doug Woolverton and Travis Colby.

Happy Saturday!

Moonie would like you to know that it’s a nice day out, and he’d like you to have a wonderful Saturday, because it’s his favorite day of the week.

But he’d also like you to know that Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday are ALSO his favorite days of the week. He didn’t want any to feel bad, so he loves them all.

Moonie’s Mail: Allysen Callery

Moonie has an excellent system for sorting mail. Even though everything comes addressed to me, he’ll snatch the stack in his grubby little hands and sort it lightening-fast. Anything that looks like a bill is mine. Anything that looks fun (card, invitation, or anything with fireworks stamps) is Moonie’s.

He was quite pleased, therefore, when “he” received a special treat: a copy of Allysen Callery’s Simple Folk Radio Session.
